Een Libysche Tanit?

F.O.Hvidberg-Hansen (La déesse TNT: une étude sur la religion canaanéo-punique, Copenhague, 1979) kwam met dit idee. Zij stelde voor om Tanit met Anat te vereenzelvigen. Asjera en Astarte vallen af. In Ugarit was Asjera nog de vrouwelijke pendant van El, maar in de Fenicisch-Punische inscripties komt haar naam niet meer voor. In de Bijbel betekent Asjera alleen nog maar = heilige plaats. Astarte wordt diverse malen samen met Tanit vermeld. Het moeten dus twee verschillende godinnen zijn. Blijft over Anat, die het Libysch-Berberse prefix ta- van het vrouwelijke heeft gekregen => ta-anat = tanit. Helaas komt Anat nooit als remplacent van Tanit voor op steles in het westen. We zijn er enige namen van personen in combinatie met Anat, zoals ‘dienaar van Anat’ en ‘Anat is genadig’.

De suggestie van Anat = Tanit kan uiteindelijk gewoon niet, omdat de naam Tanit al in het oosten opduikt, nog voor Tanit in het westen zo beroemd zou worden. Over de oosterse wortels van Tanit gaat een volgende bijdrage.

A Libyan Tanit?

In Ugarit was Asherah still the female counterpart of El, but in the Phoenician-Punic inscriptions is her name not available. In the Bible, Asherah means only = holy place. Astarte is several times mentioned together with Tanit. It should be two different goddesses. Remains Anat, who received the Libyan-Berber prefix of the female => ta-anat = tanit. Unfortunately Anat never occurs as remplacent for Tanit on stelae in the west. We have some names of individuals combined with Anat, such as "servant of Anat' and 'Anat is merciful."

The suggestion of Anat = Tanit may eventually not just because the name Tanit is already emerging in the east, before Tanit in the West would become so famous. On the oriental roots of Tanit I will write another contribution.
