Tanit in het oosten

Tanit in het oosten.
==============
Zie: J.B.Pritchard, Recovering Sarepta (Princeton, 1978). Pritchard gives the inscription a date from the 7th century BC, but G.Garbini correct it to the 6th century BC (Riflessioni sul segno di Tanit, 1980).
-Personal names.
On an ostracon of a temple in Sidon: “’Adom-pilleso, son of Ger-Tanit” (5th century BC). See: A.Vanel.
On an ostracon of Kition also with the name Ger-Tanit (6th century BC).
-We see the so-called sign of Tanit in the following places:
Sjavê Zion: 250 little statues (end 5th century BC). See: E.Linder, A cargo of Phoenician and Punic figurines, Archaeology 26, 1973.
Tyrus: the same kind of little statues with the sign of Tanit in the harbour of Tyrus.

Tanit: hulppriesteres

Tanit: Een oosterse huilpriesters?
=======================
Zie: J.D.Hawkins (The Luwian Word for Daughter, Zeitschrift für die vergleichende Sprachforshung 92, 1978).

Tanit: An oriental crying priestess ?
=========================
A hiëroglyphic-Luwian inscription Til Barsip (capital of the city-state Bit'Adini) quotes a prayer from the local ruler to the Storm God of heaven. It holds a promise that he will give the daughter of the enemy as "taniti" to the Storm God if he will bestow a victory in the expected battle. See: J.D.Hawkins (The Luwian Word for Daughter, Zeitschrift für die Vergleichende Sprachforschung 92, 1978). E.Lipinski proposes in the journal Phoenix 28.2 - 1982 to relate the "taniti" of the Storm God with Tanit-pene-Baal (Tanit, face of Baal). "Taniti" would be a Phoenician loanword and that can be distracted from the work worth "tanne" = perform lamentations. Does Tanit than actually mean a cult singer or cry priestess at the presence of Baal? And evolved Tanit of cultic function eventually to a real godessesname?
On the effective dissemination of the goddess Tanit in the east is another following contribution.

Libysche Tanit

Een Libysche Tanit?
==============

A Libyan Tanit?
==============
F.O.Hvidberg-Hansen (La déesse TNT: une étude sur la religion canaanéo-punique, Copenhague, 1979) came up with this idea. She suggested to identify Tanit with Anat. Asherah and Astarte fall off. In Ugarit was Asherah still the female counterpart of El, but in the Phoenician-Punic inscriptions is her name not available. In the Bible, Asherah means only = holy place. Astarte is several times mentioned together with Tanit. It should be two different goddesses. Remains Anat, who received the Libyan-Berber prefix of the female => ta-anat = tanit. Unfortunately Anat never occurs as remplacent for Tanit on stelae in the west. We have some names of individuals combined with Anat, such as "servant of Anat' and 'Anat is merciful."
The suggestion of Anat = Tanit may eventually not just because the name Tanit is already emerging in the east, before Tanit in the West would become so famous. On the oriental roots of Tanit I will write another contribution.

Tanit in Ugarit?

Tanit teken in Ugarit?
===============

Tanit sign in Ugarit?
===============
I may be totally wrong, but I found in Ugarit something strange. Normally we only see the so-called Tanit signs appear in the 6th/5th century BC. On a bronze statuette of Ugarit in the 14th / 13th century BC, perhaps I encounter a rudimentary sign of Tanit. Only the cross-bar seems to be missing. See: Land of Baal, Verlag Philipp von Zabern, Mainz am Rhein, 1982, p.133.
The remarks in the catalogue read:
"This small sculpture belongs to a group in Syria-Palestine made as Egyptian style bronze figures. The general view is here a male Asian deity that is not sure to identify .....
The figure wears an Egyptian reed bundles crown met two flanking ostrich-feathers. This headdress is often worn in the land of the Nile by the god of Death Osiris; in Egyptian representations as well as the Syrian deities Anat and Reshef are adorned with it. The wide collar is a typical Egyptian jewel. Compared with the original Egyptian representations patterning affects simplified and abstracted here. Over the long decorated Syrian robe with pattern bands a short pleated loincloth is placed with striated centrepiece. The apron is undoubtedly inherited from the Pharaonic garb of the New Kingdom. The centrepiece  corresponds Uraeus hangers which bore the Egyptian king at the same location on the towel."

Is there perhaps a Anat – Tanit connection?
